About the Division

Uniting the fields of neurology and neurosurgery, we are leaders in teaching comprehensive stroke care

As part of the Comprehensive Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center of USC | USC Neurosciences, the Division of Neurocritical Care and Stroke is widely recognized as a leader in advanced stroke treatment, groundbreaking research and graduate medical education training.

The Center unifies cerebrovascular services from both neurology and neurosurgery to deliver seamless care, using the latest technologies and medical therapies. Our robust multidisciplinary team includes nurse practioners, neurohospitalists, neurologists, neurocritical care physicians, and neurosurgeons, with specialties in open vascular surgery and endovascular neurosurgery, allowing for a range of treatment options. The center also comprises The Roxanna Todd Hodges Comprehensive Stroke Clinic, which offers multidisciplinary evaluation of patients for stroke and covert stroke.

The Comprehensive Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center of USC leads in stroke research, participating in innovative clinical trials and research studies, and is committed to advancing stroke treatment, prevention and rehabilitation.

The Center offers two fellowship training programs in Vascular Neurology (ACGME-accredited) and Neurocritical Care (ACGME-accredited), which provide quality training to future leaders in stroke and neurocritical care. Fellows receive training at Keck Hospital of USC, Los Angeles General Medical Center and neighboring affiliates.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide expert evaluation and outstanding treatment for patients with complex cerebrovascular emergencies. Our goal is to provide a system of care that actively connects referring physicians and referred patients to our vascular neurologists and neurocritical care intensivists, thereby ensuring rapid evaluation, transfer and treatment.

Research

The Comprehensive Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center of USC is a leader in research, attracting students, residents and fellows to participate in groundbreaking clinical trials and research projects. Our research includes prehospital stroke studies, acute stroke research, as well as stroke prevention and recovery after stroke.

Training & Education

The Division of Neurocritical Care and Stroke offers two fellowship programs, an ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology fellowship, and a UCNS-accredited Neurocritical Care fellowship.

The Vascular fellows will receive training in transient ischemic attack (TIA), acute and sub-acute ischemic stroke, and intracerebral hemorrhage, raised intracranial pressure and patients undergoing therapeutic hypothermia over 12 months. The fellowship (PGY5) will include training in clinical vascular neurologic cases with an emphasis on evaluation of stroke etiology and prevention of stroke and rehabilitation of stroke. In addition, training will include participation in pre and post-op management of neurosurgical and endovascular patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, Moya Moya and other vascular diseases.

USC TeleStroke & Neurological Emergency Program

The USC TeleStroke and Neurological Emergency program aims to improve stroke care in the community by building a true spoke-and-hub model of care. Our program helps support the growth of your facility’s stroke center while meeting your Centers For Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Joint Commission, DNV GL and Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) certification requirements.
